Who is Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley (28 December 1952 - 24 August 2019) was an Indian politician and lawyer. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Jaitley served as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019.

Arun Jaitley is a politician and lawyer from India. Narendra Modi served as Minister of Corporate Affairs from 2014 to 2019 and Finance Minister of the Government of India.



He attended St. Xavier's School in New Delhi. He studied at Sri Ram College of Commerce and graduated with an honors degree, Bachelor of Commerce degree in Commerce. From Delhi University, he received his LLB degree.

He was a student leader of the All India Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on the university campus and in 1974 he became the president of the Delhi Union's Student Union. He was in preventive detention in 1975 during an internal emergency. Arun Jaitley was actively involved in the 1973 anti-corruption movement launched by Jayaprakash Narayan and Raj Narayan.

He became the convener of the National Committee of Students and Youth Organization. He was also very active in the civil rights movement. After the Emergency, he joined the Sangh Party. Arun Jaitley has been appointed as the President of Delhi's ABVP Department and ABVP All India Secretary. Soon after he joined the party, he became the BJP's youth wing president.

He has also served as an Advocate on the Supreme Court of India and many other High Courts in India. In 1990, he was appointed Senior Advocate of the Delhi High Court. In 1989, the Government of India acted as Additional Solicitor General and did record and paperwork in the investigation of the Bofors scandal. He advocated for many prominent politicians, including Sharad Yadav, Madhavrao Scindia, and LK Advani. He presented a study paper before the Indo-British Legal Forum on Corruption and Crime in India. He represented the Government of India at the United Nations General Assembly in June 1998.

Since 1991, Arun Jaitley has been a national executive member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He became a spokesman for the party in 1999. After the NDA government came to power after the 1999 general election, he was appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Minister of State for Investment. 

He also became Minister of Justice, Justice, and Company Affairs in July 2000. In November 2000, he was promoted to Cabinet Minister. He was the party's general secretary and a national representative from July 2002 to January 2003. The NDA debacle in the 2004 general election, he returned to this position and so did his legal career. He became the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in June 2009. 

He is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat. He was one of the BJP's key leaders and strategic planners in the 2014 general elections. He has been the financing minister and defense minister since the NDA government came to power in 2014. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank. He has been instrumental in the demonetization and implementation of GST in India. He has decided not to contest the 2019 general election and will continue as a Rajya Sabha member.

He has an interest in cricket and has worked for the Delhi Delhi Cricket Association (DDCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Arun Jaitley was an outstanding student in his college life. He graduated in Commerce from Shri Ram College and graduated in Law from Delhi University.

He became the Youth Wing President in 1980 when the BJP was formed. The BJP was struggling to become the mainstream political party in India from the 1980s to the early 90s. The BJP is working hard under Atal and Advani and Arun Jaitley have been entrusted with transforming the BJP's young brigade into mature politicians.

When Atal Led NDA came to power in 1999, he was made Minister of State and held important portfolios such as Law and Justice, Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of Investment Investment.
